I'm pretty good at self rescue and I'm only going to hit a button if I really need it and know I or someone I am with/find can't make it. It works good for tracking and extended tracking, no issues with battery life. That costs more like $20/mo, the basic plan costs quite a bit for texts. I did use it during the Iditarod when my knee swelled up real bad and I had to get a flight out, resting for a couple days at a lodge, able to keep my family informed. You can send some simple messages without the phone, but it's a pain. My in-reach is the mini and it kind of needs the phone to work for any serious messaging. More watts than either in-reach or spot, works better at high latitudes, plus it uses a 121mhz proximity beacon. It goes directly to the NOAA SARSAT, no commercial third parties involved, from there it goes to the regional rescue coordination center (RCC). I also have an in-reach for tracking and messaging purposes in long endurance races, but the 406 is what I make sure to have in the most remote places.
